The Uniform Chronicles – Style Evolution vs. Revolution: What is the Right Move?

Jul 21, 2025 | Uniform Chronicles

UNIFORM CHRONICLESInsight from inside the industry on design and manufacturing, a column by Leslie Watt-McArdle, director of merchandise and product design.

Time to change your uniform program? Great but before picking swatches or sketching new silhouettes, ask yourself this:

Are we evolving, or are we starting from scratch?

Because while both routes can lead to something great, they are quite different journeys and getting clear in your direction makes all the difference. I have experienced both gradual evolution and a comprehensive transformation, and when executed effectively, each can result in impressive new outcomes.

Evolution is a change with a wink, not a wave. It says, “We’re still us, just a little different.” This is where you make smart updates that keep your brand identity intact while modernizing where it counts. Below are some ideas.

  • Upgrading fabrics for better stretch, breathability, or sustainability.
  • Tweaking silhouettes to reflect current styles without shocking the system.
  • Refreshing logos or colorways in subtle, brand-respecting ways.
  • Rolling out changes in phases to avoid disruption.

Why go the evolutionary route?

  • It is easier for teams to embrace, they still recognize themselves.
  • It keeps customer familiarity intact.
  • Operationally, it’s smoother (and often less expensive).
  • You can evaluate changes in small batches and scale up strategically.

Times when an “evolution” makes sense.

  • Your current uniform still works, but it needs some love.
  • You want better functionality without a full visual overhaul.
  • Your brand or workforce leans on consistency and legacy.

This approach is low drama, minimal risk and often, that is exactly what is needed.

Revolution: The Big Bold Reboot

Sometimes, though, small tweaks will not cut it. The old program is outdated. The brand has moved on. You are not trying to upgrade; you are trying to reintroduce yourself.

Enter the revolution.

  • New colors, new cuts, new vibe; a full reimagining.
  • Design reflects a rebrand, culture shift, or new market direction.
  • A uniform that sends a loud-and-clear message: we have changed.

Why go bold?

  • It signals transformation; internally and externally.
  • It can excite employees and re-engage customers.
  • You get to ditch outdated materials and design limitations.

Things to consider:

  • It is a bigger investment: in design, production, and rollout.
  • It may require training to help employees adapt.
  • It risks alienating those who love the old look (so rollout and messaging matter).

Revolution is best:

You are rebranding, merging, or launching something entirely new.

  • The current program no longer fits who you are.
  • You want to make a statement and are not afraid to start fresh.

I have managed through both types, and I feel sometimes, the smartest move is a little of both. Start with a big idea (revolutionary intent) but roll it out with the finesse of evolution.

Some Ideas below:

  • Piloting the fresh look with a flagship team or location.
  • Keeping brand colors but modernizing silhouettes.
  • Introducing performance upgrades within a familiar visual framework.
  • Telling the story behind the change to bring everyone along for the ride.

This blended approach helps you push forward without leaving people behind. Uniforms do more than dress your team, they express your brand, set the tone, and support day-to-day performance. Whether you evolve, revolutionize, or mix the two, the key is to be intentional.

Because even the best design will not land without a clear purpose behind it.

And no matter what the path, one thing is for certain: change done right makes your team look good and feel ready for what is next.
