The Push Towards PFAS-Free Uniforms: A New Era in Workwear Sustainability

Sep 2, 2024 | Sustainability

The uniform and workwear industry is increasingly prioritizing sustainability and environmental responsibility, with several leading companies in the U.S. making significant strides in eliminating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from their products. These “forever chemicals” are notorious for their persistence in the environment and potential health risks, making their removal a critical focus for the industry.

Reflective Apparel has been a pioneer in this movement, successfully eliminating hydrofluorocarbons, fluorine, and PFAS from its water-resistant and waterproof high-visibility garments. The company now uses C0 fluorine-free Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finishes, which provide effective water repellency without the environmental and health risks associated with PFAS.

Milliken & Company, a global leader in textile innovation, has also made substantial progress in this area. By the end of 2022, Milliken eliminated all PFAS-based finishes and fibers from its textile portfolio, including those used in uniforms, workwear, and military applications. The company introduced a PFAS-free durable water repellent technology and developed a new non-PFAS soil release technology, ensuring their fabrics continue to meet high performance standards while reducing environmental impact.

Glen Raven, Inc., known for its Sunbrella® brand, has phased out PFAS across its global portfolio, with a complete transition to non-PFAS solutions expected by the end of 2023. To address challenges with oil repellency, Glen Raven developed Sunbrella Extract™, a proprietary cleaning solution for oil-based stains, maintaining the high quality and performance customers expect from Sunbrella fabrics.

MMI Textiles has also joined the movement by introducing a PFAS-free water-repellent finish across its SAM fabric line. This new finish, developed in collaboration with The Haartz Corporation, offers durability and high performance without the environmental and health risks associated with PFAS.

Mount Vernon Mills has contributed to this industry shift by introducing non-PFAS soil-release finishes in its fabrics, particularly those used for protective apparel. This aligns with Mount Vernon’s broader commitment to offering safer and more sustainable options for uniform and workwear customers.

Lycra has recently introduced an innovative product called “LYCRA® Adaptiv fiber.” This new fiber is designed to respond to movement and provide a more personalized fit, enhancing the comfort and performance of garments. While Lycra’s current focus is on enhancing the adaptability and comfort of its products, the broader industry’s commitment to sustainability, including PFAS elimination, reflects a growing trend towards safer and more responsible textile manufacturing practices.

The uniform and workwear industry is clearly moving towards a future where high-performance workwear is also environmentally responsible. Companies like Reflective Apparel, Milliken, Glen Raven, MMI Textiles, Mount Vernon Mills, and Lycra are leading the charge, setting new standards for what it means to protect both workers and the planet. As consumer awareness and regulatory pressures increase, more companies are expected to join this critical movement, ensuring that the products we rely on every day are safe for people and the environment.
