For many years, the textile industry has relied on a small group of familiar fibers — cotton, polyester, viscose and wool. These materials built the global fashion business, but they also created serious environmental problems. Today, the industry is responsible for around 10 percent of global carbon emissions and a large share of industrial water pollution. Because of this pressure, brands first turned to organic cotton and recycled polyester as “better” options. Organic and recycled fibers were important starting points. But they are no longer enough.
