In Memoriam: Gerald Spiewak, Industry Leader and Visionary

Dec 2, 2024 | People

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald “Jerry” Spiewak, a prominent figure in the uniform and apparel industry. Jerry, former Chairman of the Board, CEO, and President of I. Spiewak & Sons, passed away peacefully at his Florida home on Thursday, November 28, at the remarkable age of 98.

Jerry was a third-generation leader in the company founded by his grandfather, Isaac Spiewak, in 1904. Under his guidance, I. Spiewak & Sons grew into a distinguished manufacturer of uniforms, outerwear, and high-visibility apparel for public safety agencies in the U.S. and abroad. Joining the family business in 1948 after graduating from the Wharton School and serving in the Navy, Jerry’s leadership helped expand the company’s reach into civilian and industrial markets, as well as Europe and Japan.

Jerry’s tenure in the industry was marked by innovation and collaboration. He co-led the company’s sales efforts with his son Michael until Michael’s untimely passing in 2007. Together, they bridged the gap between uniform and consumer markets, bringing fashion-inspired comfort and style into public safety outerwear. Beyond I. Spiewak & Sons, Jerry founded Trade Show Enterprises in 1955, which hosted successful industry events like the MWOS Outerwear Show and the Snow Ski Show.

A lifelong advocate for the industry, Jerry held leadership roles, including serving as President of both the National Outerwear and Sportswear Association (NOSA) and the National Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors (NAUMD). He continued to support NAUMD as a Board and Executive Committee member for many years. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Army & Navy Magazine Man of the Year Award in 1983 and the NAUMD Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

Jerry was not only a respected professional but also a man of profound integrity and kindness. As a Master of the Masonic Lodge and a longtime arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, he exemplified honesty and fairness. His 62-year career at I. Spiewak & Sons remains a testament to his unwavering dedication to his family, the business, and the industry he loved.

In his acceptance speech for the NAUMD Lifetime Achievement Award, Jerry reflected on his legacy:
“As I look back, the most wonderful part of my 62 years in the business with I Spiewak was the love, cooperation, and friendship from my grandfather, father, brothers, sons, and nephew. Having a business with a wonderful family that always got along and looked out for each other is a great pleasure. I wish all of you could have the same—and be healthy, happy, and have fun!”

Jerry is survived by his wife Iris, children Alan and Rosanne, stepchildren Robert, Richard, and Joy, nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Shirley, his son Michael, and his siblings Bob, Marty, and Lenore.

The uniform and apparel community has lost a true pioneer. Jerry’s legacy will continue to inspire us all. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this time of loss.
