Goodbye forever: a PFAS-free future that doesn’t compromise uniform performance

Jun 2, 2025 | Uniform Chronicles

UNIFORM CHRONICLESInsight from inside the industry on design and manufacturing, a column by Leslie Watt McArdle, senior manager of merchandise and product design.

I love writing about uniforms; the styles, the assortments, the fun of pulling together looks that are functional and look great. But today’s topic is not so fun. It is important and it is something we need to start paying closer attention to: PFAS.

If you have been in the apparel or textile world recently, you have probably heard this acronym floating around. PFAS (short for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) have been making headlines and not the good kind. Once hailed as a breakthrough for stain resistance, water repellency, and all things durable, these synthetic chemicals are now getting a much closer look, and not for the reasons we hoped.

Without getting too science-heavy (because trust me, I’m not a chemist), PFAS are a large group of synthetic chemicals with over 4,000 variations. They have been used for decades in everything from non-stick pans to firefighting foams, and yes, clothing. What makes them special is their ability to resist water, oil, grease, and heat which are superpowers when it comes to creating uniforms that last through tough jobs.

But there is a catch: these “forever chemicals” do not go away easily. They do not break down in the environment, and have been found in the human body, also. That is where the concern comes in. Studies are linking them to environmental and potential health risks, which is why more states are introducing legislation to regulate or ban their use in consumer goods, uniforms included.

In the uniform world, performance is key. Our clients count on us for pieces that last; uniforms that can take a beating, resist stains, and still look presentable at the end of a long shift. That durability has traditionally been tied to chemical finishes, some of which include PFAS.

Now, we are being asked to balance durability with safety and sustainability. It is not always easy. But it is necessary.

There are some amazing industry standards out there helping brands move in the right direction, away from PFAS, and towards safer alternatives.

Here are a few worth knowing:

OEKO-TEX Standard 100
This is a globally recognized certification that assesses harmful substances in textiles including PFAS. If you see this label, you can trust that the product has been screened for an extensive list of chemicals and meets strict safety standards. It’s one of the most trusted certifications out there and a big deal in the apparel industry.

Bluesign Certification

Bluesign looks at the entire supply chain from raw materials to final production. It ensures that manufacturers are meeting high environmental and safety standards and, yes, it includes eliminating PFAS. Many companies are pushing for Bluesign status as part of their sustainability efforts.

Other PFAS-Free Certifications
There are also newer initiatives popping up, like the GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals, which helps evaluate the safety of chemical alternatives. These kinds of certifications help brands communicate transparency and build trust with customers.

I did not get into the uniform business thinking I would need to study chemical compounds. But here we are. Our world is changing, and we have a responsibility to keep up, stay informed, and make better choices for the future.

The good news? We are not alone. With more awareness, better standards, and smart innovation, we can keep doing what we do best, making great uniforms without compromising on safety or sustainability.

And that’s a win for everyone.
