Gruner & Co., Inc. stands as a remarkable example of legacy, innovation, and commitment in the uniform and workwear industry. Since its founding in 1949, the company has evolved from a rainwear manufacturer into a trusted supplier of premium outerwear and apparel for both retail and uniform programs. Now in its third generation of family leadership, Gruner continues to thrive by combining time-tested craftsmanship with modern innovation.
A Philosophy of Form, Function, and Affordability
What sets Gruner apart is its unwavering belief that every garment must balance technical performance with visual appeal—and remain accessible in price. “Whether it’s a pilot needing perfect pocket placement or a doorman requiring elegance and weather protection, we make coats that truly work for the wearer,” says Caroline Massel, President of Gruner. That philosophy, rooted in decades of technical knowledge, is reinforced by longstanding relationships with employees, vendors, and customers alike. Many team members have been with the company for over 20 years, reflecting a culture of loyalty and shared purpose.
From Raincoats to Rugged Wear—A Family Legacy of Growth
The company’s journey began with Salo Gutfreund, an immigrant with deep expertise in rubberized rainwear who started manufacturing in a former British parachute factory. His daughter Barbara joined in the 1970s, expanding the product line to include wool and leather outerwear. In the early ’90s, her husband Harvey Arfa brought new energy to the brand through licensing initiatives, and their daughter Caroline joined in 1994, steering the company into modern styling and deeper involvement in uniform programs. Today, Caroline and Harvey co-lead Gruner with a clear focus on growth, design innovation, and customer responsiveness.

Innovation Marks the 75th Anniversary
To mark its 75th year, Gruner launched a new line of stretch knit sport coats under the Gruner1949 brand. Designed for comfort without compromising on professional appearance, these coats have been embraced across retail channels and uniform programs alike. Their Lowell Peak softshells and fleeces continue to gain traction as customers seek outerwear that combines durability with style.
“We’re also enhancing our direct-to-consumer and B2B capabilities,” Caroline adds. “People want immediacy. If you’re called to staff a flight tomorrow, you should have the coat you need before take-off.”
