Creating the Neptune Beach Police Department badge was a collaborative effort between Smith & Warren, the distributor, and the department, taking several months. Smith & Warren provided creative and technical expertise, including illustration, 3D modeling, and manufacturing sample badges, to ensure the department got a badge they loved. The effort did not go unnoticed: Smith & Warren earned an Innovation Award in this year’s competition.
Neptune Beach Police Department chose Smith & Warren’s BadgeStudio concept service to design a badge that reflected their characteristics. As a beach community known for its good surf conditions, Neptune Beach’s badge artfully features King Neptune, the Roman god of water as he reigns supreme atop the breaking waves while dolphins frolic on either side; blue enamel scrolled waves bring the ocean theme full circle.
It is, however, the sculptural details that make this badge a standout: notice King Neptune’s beard, defined muscles, and the individual scales and fins on his fish-like bottom half. The dolphins have detailed eyes and an anatomically perfect snout. Elements like forceful breaking waves and the ripple of the fan element in the badge’s background suggest the movement of water.
