The Conservation and Protection Directorate of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is responsible for the enforcement of the Fisheries Act and associated regulations, and the protection of Canada’s oceans and all of its species. DFO contributes to the economy of many communities in Canada by ensuring healthy and sustainable aquatic ecosystems through habitat protection, supporting economic growth in the marine and fisheries sectors as well as championing innovation in areas such as aquaculture and biotechnology.
The DFO carries out its responsibilities with a workforce of approximately 700 uniformed Fishery Officers and currently trains approximately 60 new cadets every 12 months. The 700 employees are located in 113 offices, hatcheries and laboratories across Canada from coast to coast to coast.
DFO’s primary desire was to modernize the look of its uniforms, while enhancing the functionality and comfort of the items. As law enforcement officers, Fishery Officers must have an appearance that indicates the authority inherent in their position. It is critical that officers be easily identified as such when interacting with the public. Moreover, as these officers carry firearms, it was important to take this into consideration in the conception of the jacket to ensure good accessibility.
The work environment for these officers is more often than not on boats, making it imperative that their uniforms have water resistant properties. Logistik provided a removable bib to the pants to protect them from salt water. Surprisingly, DFO’s previous program did not include a wardrobe for women, an issue corrected with Logistik’s line of female clothing.
The entry process for the 2024 Best Dressed Public Safety Department Competition, as well as NAUMD’s other recognition programs will open late fall. Check the website and keep reading The Pulse for updates, or contact rick.levine@naumd.com to learn more.
