From the introduction:
“In the United States, Law enforcement is among one of the three components of the criminal justice system along with courts and corrections. Each component operates semi-independently but the three collectively form a chain leading from an investigation of suspected criminal activity to the administration of criminal punishment.
Most law enforcement is carried out by law enforcement organizations or agencies, with the police being the most typical agency performing this function. Law enforcement in the United States is made up of about 18,000 U.S. police agencies, including the Divisions of Local Police, County Sheriff’s Offices, State Police/Highway Patrol, and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies. The law enforcement agencies ranging in size from one officer to more than 30,000. Many of these are municipal police departments operated by local governments, but there are actually several types of law enforcement agencies.”
