THE UNIFORM CHRONICLES
NAUMD is pleased to present The Uniform Chronicles, a column written by Leslie Watt McArdle, industry veteran and senior manager of merchandise and product design.

Let’s talk about the small but mighty heroes of uniform programs: accessories. They may not get the spotlight like the actual uniform, but they play a huge role in completing the overall look and functionality of any uniform program. So, why don’t we give them the credit they deserve?

During my days managing accessories in product management, I learned that accessories are not only necessary, but they can also be a whole lot of fun!

First things first: what exactly are we talking about when we say “accessories?” In the world of uniforms, accessories are those extra items that are worn or carried to add both style and practicality. They can serve functional purposes, such as keeping workers safe or comfortable, but they can also be powerful branding tools. Whether worn or carried, these finishing touches can make or break a uniform look.

There are two main types of accessories: Worn Accessories and Carried Accessories. Let’s dive into both categories and explore why they’re essential to complete a uniform program.

Worn Accessories: The Stylish and Functional Add-Ons

These are the pieces you wear, from headwear to gloves, belts, and badges. Let’s break down a few key examples and see why they matter:

Headwear is more than just something to keep you warm or shaded. Sure, baseball caps and knit hats are practical for weather-related reasons, but they’re also perfect for adding some flair to a uniform. Want to make sure your client’s brand stands out? A cap with a well-placed logo is the first thing people see when an employee walks into the room. And the best part? It’s affordable! Offering headwear as an add-on is a great way to increase order sizes and create a cohesive look that pops with color. Plus, who doesn’t love the added bonus of advertising on the go?

Gloves are another must-have in a variety of industries. From protecting against the cold to safeguarding workers from hazardous materials, gloves are essential. For example, in waste management, workers need chemical and cut-resistant gloves because you never know what they’ll encounter on the job. There are also gloves with strong grip control, perfect for workers in packaging and distribution, as well as electrical hazard gloves designed to protect against shocks and burns. Beyond safety, gloves can also add a touch of professionalism and uniformity to a worker’s appearance.

Belts might seem like a simple accessory, but they do much more than hold up pants. They give uniforms a clean, polished look and can even feature branding through custom logos on the buckle. A branded belt is a subtle yet effective way to incorporate a client’s logo, adding a professional finishing touch to the uniform. Belts help keep everything in place, ensuring that shirts stay tucked in and employees look sharp throughout their workday.

And let’s not forget about Badges and Lanyards. They’re essential in industries like law enforcement, healthcare, and airport security, where identification is key. But badges can also serve as another opportunity to highlight branding. Imagine a sleek, professional badge or lanyard featuring your client’s logo—it’s a small detail that can make a big impact.

Carried Accessories: Function Meets Fashion

Now, let’s move on to carried accessories—the tools your employees carry with them that also contribute to the uniform’s overall look and function.

A great example of a carried accessory is the Utility or Duty Belt. These belts, often used by law enforcement officers, military personnel, and security guards, and are designed to carry important tools like handcuffs, radios, and batons. Without these belts, workers wouldn’t have easy access to the tools they need to do their jobs effectively. Utility belts combine function with a sleek, authoritative look that complements the rest of the uniform.

Another key carried accessory is the Bag. Whether it’s a sleek garment bag for sales representatives or a tactical bag for law enforcement, bags are an essential part of many uniform programs. For clients in industries like retail, image service, or law enforcement, branded bags are an excellent way to reinforce the company’s identity. A company-branded bag carried on a sales call not only looks professional but also serves as a walking advertisement. And don’t underestimate the power of a good bag as a holiday gift or employee giveaway—everyone loves a functional item they can use every day.

Tool Pouches and Holsters also fall into the carried accessory category. For workers in construction or other trades, tool pouches allow easy access to the equipment they need without having to stop and search for tools. Similarly, holsters are vital for security guards or law enforcement, providing a safe and accessible place for firearms or other gear. Not only do these accessories improve efficiency, but they also contribute to the overall uniform aesthetic.

Why Accessories Matter

Accessories aren’t just about adding extra flair (although they do that, too!). They serve practical purposes, from keeping employees safe to providing the tools they need to do their jobs efficiently. But beyond that, there are incredible branding opportunities that are often overlooked.

By adding accessories to your uniform program, you’re not only enhancing the functionality and professionalism of your client’s workforce but also giving their brand more visibility. Think of accessories as the cherry on top of a well-put-together uniform—they may not be the focus, but they certainly have influence.

So, next time you’re thinking about uniform programs, don’t forget the finishing touches! Accessories may be small, but they’re mighty when it comes to elevating both the look and performance of a uniform.
