2024 Awards Profile: Surrey Police Department, Unisync Group

Jul 8, 2024 | Awards

The Surrey Police Department (SPS) is the newest police force in Canada. The department wanted to steer clear of the traditional male-oriented “one design fits all” approach to its ceremonial uniform, preferring to take a more modern, inclusive path to its uniform program.  Appearance was a critical concern, but so too was the need for comfort and proper fit for all officers.

The uniform was designed using a thorough historical and contemporary scan of North American police ceremonial uniforms. There was a significant focus on making the SPS ceremonial uniform gender informed. Traditionally male designed uniforms were modified in limited ways to accommodate female officers to varying degrees of success.

To produce a more inclusive garment, the SPS relied on the input from the SPS Women In Leadership Group and other organizations to establish design goals and expectations. Unisync provided their experience and expertise to put this vision into a reality. The uniform is now manufactured with fabrics that provide stretch and ease of movement, and dress caps are fitted with a comfort band.
