2024 Awards Profile: Royal Canadian Navy, Logistik Unicorp

Oct 21, 2024 | Awards

The duties performed by members of the Canadian Navy are numerous,  but also specific to the unique context of the marine environment. One of the Navy’s essential criteria is mitigating certain risks by incorporating protective features into clothing. As such, the  uniform items designed by Logistik had to be flame retardant; garments were made with a blend of anti-static textile. This not only provides protection in case of fire but also in instances of arc flashes.

In addition to safety factors, fit and comfort were important criteria in the revamping of the NECU. In fact, the new uniform incorporates elements of nominally “male” and “female” cuts or fits, and is designed to provide a close fit for all body morphologies. Uniformity is also enabled by removing recognizable gender identifiers such as button placement on shirts and orientation of pants zippers.

Final designs of the 100% Canadian-made outfit were determined after extensive field-testing by nearly 500 sailors. This representative cross section of Navy members each received two distinct styles for comparison and evaluation of specific features such as the form, fit, function and comfort of the uniform components.

Revamped ergonomics were among the many new features evaluated by the participants. This includes improved angle access for pockets and additions at the knees and elbows to facilitate movement. Taking a cue from the Canadian Armed Forces’ infantry uniform, Navy members now benefit from the inclusion of kneepad inserts to accommodate different tasks.

The result is a completely modernized uniform, reflecting the poise and confidence of the Canadian sailors who wear it proudly.
