A return to tradition sparked the switch to this new uniform program. London PD’s Chief Johnson wanted a return to a traditional navy uniform since the previous attire didn’t project the desired look.
For years, the department had been in a solid black class A. While professional, the image wasn’t quite right according to the chief; he wanted to give the department a uniform update and go back to the traditional navy uniform with gray contrasting stripe, pocket flaps and epaulets
Flying Cross worked directly with Chief Johnson and his staff, showing them available fabric blends that would bring his vision to life while also providing the desired performance features for officers who perform their duties in a multi-climate environment. After much back and forth, the chief selected the Flying Cross Command 100% poly uniform with the light gray stripe on the pants and light gray pocket flaps and epaulets on the shirt.
The response to the new look has been enthusiastic. However, even with the recognition members of the department do not want people to forget what it means to represent their community.
”It just brings it home how we try to bring professionalism to our community and that just goes along with our uniforms. You know it starts there and goes with the officer and that’s our whole mindset with how we police in the community,” said Officer Hobie Daugherty, London PD public affairs officer. “ We’re very community police oriented and for people to be able to see us and recognize us is a big thing for our department.”
